  1. Read “Section III—Guide to Behavioural Competency-based Interviewing” and “Section VIII—Technical Competencies Report” available on the CCSA website: http://www.ccsa.ca/Eng/topics/Workforce-Development/Workforce-Competencies/Pages/default.aspx
  2. Review the sample questions in each of the guides. Write out your answers to three or four of the questions. Identify for yourself the levels and areas of competencies in which you are strong and areas for continual learning.Some sample questions you may want to try are:
    1. Adaptability/Flexibility – Level 2Give me an example of a situation in which you changed your behaviour or approach according to the circumstances and the people involved:
      • Why did you need to change your approach?
      • Describe how you changed your approach/behaviour.
      • How easily did you adapt to the situation?
      • What was the outcome?
    2. Analytical Thinking and Decision Making – Level 2Tell me about a situation in which you had to make a decision or recommendation, first weighing the advantages and disadvantages of a number of options:
      • Describe the situation, and what decision was required.
      • What were the options available to you?
      • How did you identify the options?
      • What factors did you take into consideration when determining how to proceed?
      • What did you decide to do?
      • What was the outcome?
    3. Client Service Orientation – Level 1Describe a situation where a client was particularly satisfied by your response to a request or need. Describe the situation, including the client’s need/request.
      • What was your role in meeting the client’s request?
      • What did you do to meet the client’s request?
      • What effect did your response to the client have on the work being done?
    4. Understanding Substance Use – Level 1When thinking about counselling services, what are some key considerations?
      • What key factors or approaches have been important for clients when they ranked a counselling experience as successful? (Sample probes: motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, building rapport, relapse mitigation, collaborative treatment, life skills)
      • How have you addressed relapse, risk, and protective factors with clients?
      • How have you created a safe environment for clients?
      • How has use of plain language increased your success in counselling clients?
