It is now time to focus on learning the skills you need to start the EDM process. This activity will provide some continuity with the questions/case situations that you developed in Activity 1. The aim of this activity is to give you applied practice for developing good searchable/answerable clinical questions. We recommend that you use the PICO (the T is optional) format.
- Return to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) web site at: http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/45245.html. This time, pay particular attention to the “Ask” Section for developing a clinical question. On this web site, you’ll also find a useful link to the Duke University Medical Center Library at: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Services/Tutorials/EBM/Question.htm
- Read: Fineout-Overholt, E., & Johnston, L. (2005). Teaching EBP: Asking searchable, answerable clinical questions. Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, 2, 157–160.
- Revisit the questions/situations you developed in Activity 1.
- Using the PICO format, transform these questions/situations into searchable, answerable questions. You can use these questions to complete Assignment 4.
