Evidence-based decision making is an underpinning principle of the CCSA competencies. Understanding the skills used in EBDM is relatively straightforward, but like any skill, it requires some practice to become proficient. In this lesson, you practiced the skills for appraising research evidence. However, evidence-based practice is not based solely on empirical research—a clinician’s experience and expertise together with her/his client’s preferences and values are integrated into a clinical decision and recommendation. In this lesson, you practiced writing succinct recommendations that incorporate the multiple domains of EBDM. You implemented all the steps of the EBDM process by looking at a specific case situation.
This completes the lessons that focused on evidence-based practice. Lessons 7, 8, and 9 will cover the established and innovative approaches for the treatment and prevention of substance use disorders.
